Airspace, Leachate and Stability upgrade

An independent assessment by Tonkin + Taylor identified three intersecting issues – landfill stability, leachate resilience and airspace management. In December 2021 the NTRLBU approved a $5.9m upgrade of the landfill to increase airspace, help extend its life, and reduce environmental risks. The objective of the works was to ensure the resource consent conditions regarding landfill stability were satisfied and that the risk associated with landfill slope stability is very low, both during the operational and closed phases of landfill life. In addition, the works include a degree of resilience that is reasonably practicable to achieve with good landfill stability in the closed phase of landfill life. The work was completed in 2024.

In September 2023 construction began on a significant leachate system upgrade and stability project at York Valley Landfill. This project was competitively tendered on the open market and was successfully won and awarded to Mike Edridge Contracting.

The project was completed on programme and on budget with no significant health & safety or environmental incidents.
